Richard Nelson Peer went to be with his God on Wednesday, December 21st having experienced a stroke on the 18th. He died peacefully surrounded by family. He is survived by wife Christine, daughters Colleen Dillon, Lauren Graham, Lisa Keene and son Richard Peer, Jr.
Richard Peer was a unique individual with special talents in mentoring others. An avid proponent of the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program, Richard sponsored others with addictions for the last 42 years of his life. He spoke regularly at AA meetings and took phone calls many times a day from AA members going through withdrawal and other challenges. He regularly visited those in rehabilitation facilities to encourage and coach them through treatment.
Rich, as his friends called him, challenged others to make the necessary changes in their lives for their own sakes and those of their families. In this way he positively impacted many people. His phone was on 24/7 to receive a friend’s call.
Richard Peer was a beloved husband and father, with 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Richard had a special place in his heart for the children, seeing in them the innocence of youth and the promise of the future.
Richard served in the US Air Force from 1964 to 1966, posted in Greenland. While enlisted Richard learned the carpentry and electrical skills he would develop and make his trademarks as the ultimate handyman. Rich worked as office manager at Numac Office Supplies, Newark, NJ for 40 years.
Richard took on many projects at his first house in Maplewood, NJ, including renovation of the basement, attic and kitchen as well as adding a back porch. His work was always robust and meticulous.
Richard married MaryAnn Siarkowski in 1963, with whom he had his four children. Mary Ann went to be with the Lord in 2003 following a prolonged battle with cancer. Richard was married again in 2012, to Christine Seadler, with whom he has lived in Morristown for the past 9 years.
Richard will be missed for many reasons, including his bright smile, sharp wit, humor and positive attitude. He’ll be remembered for trusting in God in overcoming the challenges in his life. He brought hope and optimism to many lives and we continue to believe he does this even now. Our family was truly blessed to have such a wonderful father, grand father and great grand father as our patriarch. Dad was a shinning example of a life well lived.
It’s hard to think we will not have his wisdom and guidance going forward however our joy is in knowing he is with the Lord
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 7th, 10:30am at
