He was born in Longmont, CO, on November 25, 1941, the son of the late Marion and Augustina (nee Pompas Martinez) Gallegos. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marcella J. (nee Bustamante) Gallegos and five sons and two daughters: Glen (Dana) of Frederick, CO; Lincoln (Kris) of Windsor, CO; Kenneth (Melissa) of Loveland, CO; Keith (Jacinda) of Greeley, CO; Jeanene Gallegos of Greeley, CO; Jaclyn (Ben) Walrath of Greeley, CO; and Alan (Ashley) of Syracuse, UT. He is also survived by two sisters, Eleanore Davies of Longmont, CO; Dolores (Gilbert) Gonzales of Longmont, CO; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Daniel Gallegos; and brother-in-law Robert Davies.
Albert graduated from Longmont High School in May of 1959 and married his high school sweetheart, Marcella, on June 20th. He got a job with the City of Longmont tree-trimming department in the early 60s and an opportunity to start his electric lineman career began. He moved his young family to Los Alamos, New Mexico to work with the Bureau of Reclamation installing power lines in rough desert and mountainous country. In 1966, he moved back to Longmont and continued his lineman career within the city’s electric department. In the early 70s, the family moved to Fort Collins so that Al could work for the Poudre Valley REA. In 1971, the the family moved to Greeley when Al took a lineman job with Home Light & Power (which soon changed names to Public Service Company of Colorado) where he showed leadership in training employees with skills learned at the Hot Sticks School and was featured on Employee Assistance Program posters. He became the local IBEW Union President as the company changed hands again to Xcel Energy. He achieved his ‘dream job’ as a Serviceman with his own truck in the community, arriving at residences and businesses with power outages to troubleshoot and identify issues that he would fix solo or call in a crew to help mitigate. His skillful ability to connect with the public was appreciated until his retirement in the early 2000s.
Albert was a devoted father and grandfather who enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, horseshoes, and playing cribbage and dominoes. As a youth he became a classic car enthusiast as a member of the Highwaymen car club and raised pigeons and rabbits. He was a spiritual man involved in many church activities, participating in the Christian Family Movement and Marriage Encounter; and offering leadership in the Denver Cursillo Movement, in the Serra Club – an organization that assists men in the seminary studying to become priests – and in the St. Peter’s Catholic Church - Our Lady of the Rockies prayer group.
He supported his children's and grandchildren’s sports whether coaching or spectating, and took enormous pride as a parent-competitor in bowling and bocce ball alongside Jeanene in the Special Olympics. The 30-gallon blood donor liked meeting friends for a cup of coffee and a piece of pie, and regularly joined the Class of ‘59 group to socialize.
