Conocer a Ana cuando llegué a Hopkins en 1971, despistada y bastante nostálgica por mi familia en Puerto Rico, Ana me hacía sentir que no estaba tan lejos, que había personas que muy pronto serían parte de una familia extendida. Era suave y entusiasta y, al ser un poco mayor que yo, me recordaba a mi madre.

Siento mucho su pérdida y me alegro de que haya estado junto a las personas que más la querían durante todos estos últimos años.  Nosotros, todos, sus compañeros de Hopkins, la recordaremos siempre.

Un abrazo cariñoso a toda la familia.

REMEMBERING ANA AND JOHN SNELL

I began my graduate studies in Romance Languages, with specialization in Spanish, at Johns Hopkins University in the fall of 1970. My cohort consisted of Ana Snell, Emilie Bergmann, Ray Green, and Sue Fratken. Sue Fratken completed the M.A. and did not continue in the program. Ana, Emilie, Ray, and I were colleagues during the following years, and we worked closely together as we pursued our doctoral studies. We got along beautifully and supported each other; that is, we were friends rather than rivals. Each wanted the others to succeed. Ray was our model for sharing and generosity. Emilie, Ray, and I were full-time students. We lived on campus (in graduate housing) and spent most of our time in the library. Ana, in contrast, was a most serious and dedicated student AND a wife and mother. We had the opportunity to get to know John, a true gentleman, and the cute and precocious Elena. Ana was highly intelligent, kind, gracious, and—it must be added—beautiful. She made every class more enriching and more engaging. It was a pleasure to be around her. We remained friends after graduation and stayed in touch for the following decades. John kindly stayed in contact when Ana was unable to communicate with us. They were both among the most exemplary people that I have known, and the memory of them is, as is said, a blessing, as is the contact with Elena, who has done her parents proud. My wife Susan, whom I was dating at the time I was in graduate school—we went to my Hopkins graduation on our honeymoon—got to know and admire Ana and John, as well. In sum, I cannot praise Ana, John, and Elena highly enough. They are shining lights in the universe. I am so happy to count them among my favorite people and long-term friends.
