Andrew Leonard Bryant passed away peacefully at home on July 3, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Andy was born on June 27, 1939, to Leonard and Jean (Senderling) Bryant. He grew up near Harrisburg, PA, and graduated from Millersville State College. After a brief stint teaching, he began graduate studies at Duke University in the biology program, specializing in high elevation plant growth. He conducted his research near Cottonwood Pass. At Duke, he was a biology instructor prior to joining the admission office. There he rose to Senior Associate Director and remained for 17 years. Andy was instrumental in catapulting Duke to the prominence it enjoys today through innovative recruitment strategies and development of its fine student-athlete program. In 1985 he accepted the position of Director of Admissions at SMU in Dallas, TX.
He moved to Colorado in 1993 where he was an administrator and teacher at the Dawson School and a summer fly-fishing guide in Lake City. After he retired, Andy was a private college choice counselor, and he continued to guide in the summers. He truly was more excited for someone else to learn to cast, catch, and release trout than he was in landing one himself. He loved to read and was a consummate teacher. He had an insatiable curiosity, a wicked wit, and a kind word for all.
Andy is survived by his wife, Susan, and his daughters, Liesl and Abby. Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association Rocky Mountain Chapter. A celebration of his life will be held at First Congregational Church – Boulder, 1128 Pine St, on Friday, July 10, at 1:30 pm.
