Bruce was born on June 30, 1946 in his beloved Longmont to Henry “Hank” Hobbs and Kathryn Letford Hobbs. He graduated from Longmont High in 1964, where he was an outstanding wrestler.
Following high school, he went to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. He left school when drafted by the U.S. Army, serving in Viet Nam for three years. After returning from the war he would attend CSU for a brief time.
Bruce spent a long career with the Golden Van Lines Company, working from 1973 and retiring with the company in 2008. There he worked as a driver and furniture handling specialist.
Bruce will be fondly remembered as a free spirit who marched to his own drummer. He was always independent and occasionally stubborn. He had an infectious personality and was always a charmer with a quick compliment for everyone he greeted. His friendly greeting frequently was accompanied by a joke or story.
Bruce enjoyed the game of golf and the friendships he had through the game. He and his many friends were frequently found at the “hallowed grounds” of Sunset Golf Course, his home away from home the past 40 years. He enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to Mexico. He was a lifelong fan of the Denver Broncos. He also rooted for the underdog in other aspects of life.
One of the recent highlights of his life was a reunion last summer with buddies he served with in Viet Nam. He enjoyed sharing memories of their experience with them for the first time in 40 years.
Preceding him in death were his parents.
Surviving are his son Charlie Strom of Livermore; his brothers; Charles Hobbs of Stockdale, Texas and Michael Hobbs and his partner Tim Dasenbrock of Denver; sisters Barbara Hobbs of Portland, Oregon and Judy Hobbs of Longmont and numerous nieces and nephews.
A cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 24, 2011 at the First Congregational, United Church of Church, 9th and Francis Streets, with Reverend Rick King officiating.
