

Candace A. Beck, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2018, in Longmont, Colorado after a 6-month battle with cancer. She was born on November 10, 1948 in Hutchinson, Kansas, to the late Chet and Ferne (Westerman) Unruh.
Candy grew up and attended schools in Kansas. She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1966. After graduation she went to Washburn University then transferred to Kansas State University, where she received a Bachelor’s in Science in 1970. Growing up in Manhattan, she lived next door to and met Steven Beck. Steven and Candy were married on May 30, 1969 in Manhattan, KS. During the 1970s Steve and Candy moved around the country to complete school, and for Steve to serve in the military. In 1977, Steve and Candy settled in Lubbock, Texas where they had their 3 children. Candy attended graduate school at Texas Tech University and earned her PhD in BioChemistry in 1989. In 1988, the family relocated to Boulder, Colorado, and Candy began her career at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. In 1999, Steve and Candy moved to the east coast for a short 3 years before returning to Longmont, Colorado.
Candy was active in golfing leagues, quilting groups, and enjoyed traveling with her friends and family. She took trips all over the world including family vacations to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Florida, golf trips across the US, trips to Italy and France with her friends, Jazz Fest in New Orleans, and the Blues Cruise with her companion. Candy loved life and had fun in life.
Candy is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Kate Beck of Brooklyn, NY; her daughter, Stephanie Beck of Kansas City, KS; her daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Aaron Rodriguez of Longmont, CO; precious grandchildren, Josephine and Rory; brother and sister-in-law, Chet and Peggy Unruh of Overland Park, KS; sister and brother-in-law Kay and Bill Hileman of Grand Junction, CO; many wonderful nieces and nephews; and her companion of 5 years, John Wassberg of Prairie Village, KS. Candy was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Steven Beck.
