

Charles ""Chuck"" Sorenson, 83, of Longmont, died August 18, 2010 at Longmont United Hospital.Chuck was born September 5, 1926 in Longmont, the son of Chris and Irene (Howlett) Sorenson. He was a lifelong resident of Longmont. After graduating from LHS in 1946, he attended CSU for a year and then Barnes Business College in Denver, from which he graduated.On September 12, 1948 he married Shirley Miller in Englewood, CO. He loved the mountains. As a child and youth he spent as much time as possible with members of his family at a cabin in left hand canyon near Ward owned by his Aunt, Ethel (Sorenson) Ziegler. Later, he worked on various ranches in the nearby mountains and also worked for his family's trucking company, Sorenson Truck Service, which started as a general commodities and coal trucking company and eventually specialized in livestock transportation. After serving as the general manager of Sorenson Truck Service for many years, in 1969 he took over the family trucking business from his father, Chris Sorenson. He was the third generation of his family involved in the trucking business. The family owned company operated in and around Longmont, throughout Colorado, and across the country for a total of more than 75 years.He was the past President of the Colorado Motor Carriers Association and also a member and past President of the Pioneers, an organization of descendants of very early settlers of the Longmont/Mead area. His great-great grandfather settled near Mead in the late 1860's.Chuck was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Longmont, a church that his grandfather, Charles Henry Sorenson, helped build. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Sorenson, in 2001. After her passing he joined the Widowers Club of Longmont. He was a member of the BPOE No. 55 Elks Lodge.Survivors include his sons Charles Sorenson of Harrisville, NH, John and Mark Sorenson of Longmont, CO. He is further survived by 4 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 22 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Howe Mortuary, Longmont. COFuneral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 23, 2010 at First Baptist Church, Longmont, Colorado. Burial will follow at Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
