Donna was born on May 22, 1947, in Salisbury, Maryland, to Wilmer Richard “Dick” and Kathleen Jones. She graduated from Wicomico Senior High School and went on to earn her degree in Education from Towson University.
In 1970, Donna met the love of her life, Joe O’Connell of Silver Spring, Maryland. They married on July 8, 1972, and shared over 50 wonderful years together before Joe’s passing in 2023. A dedicated educator, Donna spent over three decades teaching 4th through 6th grades in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Upon retirement, she and Joe relocated to Longmont, Colorado, in 2005, where they embraced the next chapter filled with grandkids, new friendships, community, and adventure.
In Longmont, Donna found joy in art classes, solving her daily Wordle, crossword, and Connections puzzles, and hosting cherished Sunday dinners for the family. She and Joe were regulars at local establishments, where they became known for their warmth, friendliness, and love of sports. Donna had unique gift for making everyone feel seen, she was always the first to ask about your children or grandchildren, and she took notes to remember the details.
Above all, Donna’s greatest joy was her family. To her grandchildren, who lovingly called her Noni, she was a devoted and enthusiastic supporter. She never missed a baseball livestream, swim meet video, or soccer highlight, and was always eager to hear about their latest passions. Her pride in her family was boundless, and she made sure they knew it every single day.
Donna is survived by her children: Kelly O’Connell Stroker (Joe) of Niwot, CO, and Michael O’Connell (Lindsay) of Hagerstown, MD; her beloved grandchildren: Kyla Stroker (19), Mira Stroker (15), Camden O’Connell (14), and Declan O’Connell (8); and her brother David Jones and sister-in-law Ginny Jones of Ocean City, MD.
She is preceded in death by her husband Joe; her parents, Wilmer and Kathleen Jones; and her in-laws, Joseph and Dorothy O’Connell.
The O’Connell, Jones, and Stroker families deeply appreciate the outpouring of love, support, and prayers during this time.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.howemortuary.com for her loving family.
