

From 1944 to 1946, Ernest served in the Army. He graduated with his GED from Ft. Morgan High School July 15, 1946. Two years later on June 18, 1948, he married Gloria Schabes in Estes Park. They were married for 61 years before Gloria’s passing in 2010. After they married, Ernest and Gloria moved to Boulder so that he could finish his degrees at the University of Colorado. On June 10, 1950, Ernest graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Business. After graduation, Ernest and Gloria decided to settle down in Longmont.
For many years, Ernest contributed to the Longmont community through the various jobs he held. He first served as the City Treasurer from 1957 to 1961, became a member of the school board from 1965 to 1969, and was the Mayor of Longmont from 1977 to 1979. He also worked for Hogsett Lumber until his retirement in 1981. Ernest was also a member of many clubs in his community, including the Long Range Planning Committee, Lyons Club, Left Hand Water Board, Platte Valley Power Authority, and Investment Club. He loved to hike and fish and swim, collect coins, collect railroad spikes, and enjoyed wood working and oil painting.
Ernest is survived by his daughter Louise Blanchard and son-in-law Ted Blanchard, son Wayne Patterson and daughter-in-law Nancy Patterson, grandchildren Becky Blanchard, Heather and Thorsten Kurpjuhn, Melissa Patterson, Holly Patterson, Andrew and Chiree Patterson; great grandchildren Fynn Kurpjuhn, Svenja Kurpjuhn, Isaiah Patterson, Micah Patterson, and Ben Patterson.
A Memorial Service will be held for Ernest on SUnday, April 16, 2023 at 2:00pm at CentraLongmont Presbyterian Church in Longmont. Should you wish to honor Ernest, memorial donations are encouraged to the City of Longmont Centennial Swimming Pool, where he spent a great deal of time.
