Ethel Adella Marshall (Daniel)

Ethel Marshall, 101, died at home peacefully on November 17, 2011 surrounded by her family and friends. Ethel was born November 2, 1910 in Longmont, Colorado to Irwin “Dan” and Myrtle (Sanders) Daniel, and was the baby sister of Charles “Chick” Daniel.

Her family moved a few years later to Lyons, Colorado where she attended Montgomery School House and Lyons Elementary. She had many memories including the 1918 Armistice Day celebration, the Lyons Mercantile, Gilgers Grocery Store and Lyons Drug, where all the kids used to hang out!

Ethel graduated from Longmont High School in 1928, and married her high school sweetheart, George Swift on the coldest day on record in 1930. They lived in Estes Park from 1931 to 1957 where George worked for the National Park Service. She and George had a son, “Ray”, born in 1931. Ethel remembers taking her young son up to the workers cabin and cooking for the team that cleared Trail Ridge road in the spring. She was the “Room Mother” for Ray and his classmates all through school, and never missed a football or basketball game.

Raymond Swift served in the US Air Force, and died in 1952. Ethel and George moved to the San Francisco office of the National Park Service in 1957, and they returned to Lyons to retire in 1962. Her favorite pastimes were fishing, hiking, in fact anything in the great outdoors. She was also an avid Bridge player.

When George died in 1970, Ethel moved to Longmont. Ethel married her long time friend Ralph Marshall in 1979, and lived in Arizona and Colorado until Ralph's death in 1986.

She traveled all over the United States and the world including Spain, Kenya, and the Panama Canal. She lived in Longmont, enjoying her many friends and playing lots of Bridge until the spring of 2010 when she moved to Fort Collins.

Ethel celebrated her 101st birthday on November 2, 2011 and received beautiful flowers, visitors and an avalanche of cards from friends, family and former classmates of Ray’s.

Ethel is survived by her nieces Barbara Harper and Shirley Rivas, and her “adopted” family - sons John Cheney of Fort Collins and Robert Cheney of Estes Park, daughters-in-law Betty Clark of Fort Collins and Lois Cheney of Estes Park, six very loved grandchildren, and 8 adored great-grandchildren. Her family and friends will miss her.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. with the Funeral services to follow at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 21, 2011 at the Howe Mortuary Chapel. Interment will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Lyons Cemetery, Lyons, CO.
