Eugene A. Whitcomb

Gene Whitcomb of Longmont died December 4, 2011 at his home. He was 80 years old.Gene was born on May 9, 1931 in Winooski, Vermont, the son of Lloyd and Martha Adell (Williams) Whitcomb. He grew up on a dairy in Vermont and was a ski instructor at Stowe Mountain Resort. Gene then attended Nova College and Biscayne College in Florida. Gene also honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He married Lily Hardesty on January 8, 1970 in Lauderdale Lake, Florida. Gene was a career law enforcement officer, beginning with the Davie Police Department in Davie, Florida. He then worked for the Lauderdale Lake Police Department where he obtained the rank of Lieutenant. Gene and his family moved to Colorado in June 1976 where he was Police Chief of the Dacono Police Department. He then worked one year for the Firestone Police Department until he was appointed as a Federal Officer assigned to Rocky Flats. Gene worked at Rocky Flats until his retirement in 1996.Gene was a member of the Police Chiefs Association. He was devoted to his family and kept a family ritual to go some place on Sundays with his family. Gene will be remembered as a quiet man of few words.He was preceded in death by his parents.Gene is survived by his wife Lily Whitcomb of Longmont; thirteen children, Robert Whitcomb and Martha Lambert, both of Vermont, Edward Holder of Loveland, Jeff Holder and Chris Whitcomb of Ft. Collins, Richard Holder of Firestone, Gena Whitcomb, Beth Shields, Jennifer Cross, Zach Whitcomb and Esther Whitcomb, all of Longmont, Darlene Whitcomb of Oklahoma and Patty Ann Whitcomb of Texas; his brother, Roger Whitcomb; twenty-three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.A celebration of Gene's life will take place from 1:00 “ 5:00 PM on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at the family home, 4110 Ravenna Place in Longmont. Cremation has taken place at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and can be mailed to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
