

George L. McHugh, age 73, of Loveland, Colorado died suddenly on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, from a heart attack. George was born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on July 11, 1948, to Thomas McHugh and Jewell Alcorn McHugh. His family moved to Maryland a short time later. George graduated in 1966 from Wheaton High School in Wheaton, Maryland. He graduated in 1973 from the University of Maryland College Park, where he worked in the Computer Lab and was active in the Unitarian students’ club. He married Teddi Cymbala in 1971. Teddi preceded him in death in 1996. His parents also preceded him in death: Thomas McHugh in 2001 and Jewell McHugh in 2003.
He loved computer programming and was very good at it. After graduation he worked for technology companies in Minnesota (Control Data and Sperry UNIVAC) and New Mexico. In 1995, he moved to Lafayette, Colorado. He worked for NeoCAD in Boulder and for Xilinx in Boulder/Longmont after NeoCAD was acquired by Xilinx. In 2015 George was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. In 2016 he retired from Xilinx after working there for 20+ years. During his time at Xilinx his awards included: The Ross Freeman Award for Technical Innovation (1998) and two patents (2011 and 2013).
George was a voracious reader and enjoyed passing on his knowledge of all kinds of subjects to others. He was an amateur radio operator (FCC Extra Class) and was a member of HAM radio clubs in the area. He enjoyed traveling with his first wife, Teddi, to her running meets throughout the country. He loved swimming and walking his beloved dogs. Some of his other activities included riding his motorcycles, scuba diving, glider piloting and participating in car touring meets.
George was a very kind man and easy to like. He liked everyone he met. When he got to know someone, he considered them a friend for life.
He is survived by his wife Jane McHugh (nee Wojahn) whom he married in 1999. They resided in Berthoud, Colorado, from 1999 until moving to Loveland in 2021. He is also survived by his sister Catherine McHugh of Silver Spring, Maryland, and multiple cousins in the United States, Australia, Canada and Ireland. He will be greatly missed.
