George Irvine Reed was born in Belleville, Kansas on August 12, 1922, to John Alonzo and Elsie Irene Harkness Reed. When George was born, he was the second son of the family, to be followed by three sisters. When he was young boy, the Reed family moved from Kansas to Boulder, Colorado, having lived near the downtown area through his school years. George grew up there, attending and graduating from Boulder High School, which is where he met his wife Nadine.
On March 16, 1942, George Reed and Nadine Rae Norris were married in Kimball, Nebraska, shortly before George left Boulder to begin military service with the Army Air Force for World War II.
During his years in the service, they lived in married servicemen housing in Eagle Pass, Texas, where their son Stephen was born. Fortunately, a couple of weeks before George was due to ship out overseas, the War ended, and the young couple moved back to Boulder.
After the service, George began working in the food service industry, and Nadine went to business school. Over the years, George held various positions that required the young family to move often. After having lived in Wyoming, Utah, Montana, and Idaho, they eventually came back to Boulder with their son Stephen and two other children, David and Linda. They lost Stephen to a car accident in 1968. The family continued to live in Boulder or the surrounding area. In 1996, George and Nadine moved to Longmont, where they have lived since. George and Nadine had six grandchildren who live in various states throughout the country and seven great grandchildren.
While in Boulder, George worked as a salesman, general manager and part owner for Central Packing Company, a meat packing company with plants in Boulder and Denver, for 18 years. After leaving Central Packing Co., he went to work for Monfort of Colorado at their corporate headquarters in Greeley for 15 years before retiring. In his spare time, George enjoyed working with wood and built many of the pieces of furniture now gratefully owned by their children. In their spare time, George and Nadine worked as their own general contractor building homes in Boulder County either for the family or for investment purposes.
Throughout the years, they also were very active in their church and in various social groups in their community. Their faith in God and their love for their family and friends played a large part of their lives for which they were always very thankful.
In October 2013, George suffered a severe stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side. He and Nadine moved into a nursing home in Longmont, Colorado, after the stroke. George’s health continued to slowly fail until the end. He passed away peacefully while asleep in his bed at the age of 93.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2015, at the Howe Mortuary Chapel in Longmont. Burial will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park in Boulder.
Memorial contributions are requested to the Longmont Humane Society, 9595 Nelson Road, Longmont, CO 80501, or to the Wild Animal Sanctuary, 1946 Co Rd 53, Keenesburg, CO 80643.
