

Gladys Mae Martin, of Longmont, Colorado, died Sunday, September 28, 2008, at Longmont United Hospital due to complications from heart surgery. She was 87 years old.Gladys was born August 21, 1921, near Niwot, Colorado, to Frank Ardner Johnson and Ethel May (Fitzhugh) Johnson. She grew up on the family farm just west of Coot Lake, attended the Batchelder School, and graduated from Boulder High School in 1938. During WWII, Gladys assisted the war effort by working at Goodyear Rubber Company and at a metal heat-treating plant in California. She returned to Colorado and worked for as an operator for the local phone company.On February 22, 1947, Gladys married Lorenza Carl ""Bud"" Martin in Niwot. The couple made their home in Longmont.Mrs. Martin was an avid fan of University of Colorado athletics, especially women's basketball. She enjoyed following the Little League World Series. While her children were in school, she never missed a band concert or their other school events. Her family will miss her tremendously, along with her delicious macaroni and cheese.Survivors include her husband, Bud Martin of Longmont; children, Lee Martin and his wife, Kari of Colorado Springs, Nancy Sandoval and her husband, Arcy of Longmont, and Alan Martin and his wife, Ann of Denver, three grandchildren, Kim, David and Ilana; and a brother, Henry Johnson and his wife, Berdette, of Loveland.She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, F. LaVerne and LeRoy Johnson; a sister, Helen Averill; and a brother and sister whom died as children in the 1918 flu epidemic.Graveside services will be held at Foothills Gardens of Memory at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2008.Memorials may be made to the Longmont Humane Society, 9595 Nelson Road, Longmont, CO 80501.Please share thoughts, memories and condolences with the family at www.howemortuary.com.
