Hank was born on May 14, 1928 in Highland, New York to Louis Paul Werner and Carrie Travis Werner. Raised in Highland, he joined the U.S. Army just prior to his high school graduation, declining an appointment to West Point. He was stationed in France, just as World War II came to a close. However, he stayed to close up the European Campaign serving in both France and later in Germany.
It was while a Master Sergeant that he met the love of his life, a beautiful German girl, Dorothee Stahlhut. They were married on July 19, 1952 in Giessen, Germany. Dorothee preceded him in death in 1979 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
The couple returned to the United States in 1953 where Hank took a position with I.B.M., as an assembler on the electronic typewriter line. In 1956, he transferred to Kingston and was appointed department manager. He then spent 8 years in Lexington. He worked for a number of years in New York, before working in the Lexington, Kentucky plant. In 1965, he was sent to Boulder, where he and four others set up the newly built plant. He served as Production Manager, retiring in 1984 following 32 years with Big Blue.
Hank was an avid hunter and fisherman. Through this joy, he passed along the safety of the sport and privilege of hunting. His brother and he enjoyed annual elk hunting trips in the rugged Rockies of Colorado.
Hank was an integral part of his community. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. #2541 of Louisville; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lafayette and the American Legion, Post #111, where he served twice as Post Commander.
In 1981 he married Rose Knowles. She preceded him in death. In addition he was preceded by his brothers Paul and Louis Werner.
Surviving are his daughter Carrie Werner Adams of Longmont; brothers Clifford Werner of Louisville; and David (Marilyn) Werner of Highland, New York; a sister Augusta Gutierrez of Albuquerque, New Mexico; five grandchildren Erin (John) Hadenfeldt and their children Bodie, Brynlie, and Brycen; Mike (Christine Filson) Adams; Kelly (Levi Gray) Adams; TJ Adams; Travis Adams.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday November 8, 2014 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2200 11th Ave. Longmont, Colorado.
