

Janet was born on December 22, 1942 in Mitchell, South Dakota to Gail Hilgenberg and Frances Corwin Hilgenberg.
After graduating from Hot Springs high school in South Dakota, she briefly attended Chadron State College in Nebraska, before marrying Jerry Mahlman on June 10, 1962 in Hot Springs. She followed Jerry’s storied scientific career and raised two wonderful children in Lawrenceville, NJ. She also taught piano, gave her time to various volunteer organizations and was a church youth group leader, impacting the lives of the many people she touched. As an empty nester, she returned to school and proudly graduated from Rider University in 1994 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences and worked as a counselor for families dealing with addiction.
The Mahlman’s moved to Longmont in 2001. She loved Colorado, having spent many summers at her parent’s cabin in Meeker Park. The cabin remains in the family where they continue to spend quality time together.
Preceding her in death is her father.
Surviving are her husband of Longmont; her mother of Longmont; her son Gary Mahlman of Longmont; a daughter Julie (Garrin) Kapecki of Lincolnshire, IL and two grandsons Alex and Collin Kapecki also of Lincolnshire.
A cremation has been entrusted to the Howe Mortuary and Crematory.
Memorial services and celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 21, 2012 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, with Reverend Rick King officiating.
