

John Freeman Matherly was born July 25, 1927 in Mattoon, Illinois to William Edward and Margaret (Hammond) Matherly. He graduated from Mattoon High School and served in the U.S. Navy in the Philippines at the end of World War II. John was most proud of being left end on the Illinois All State football team. He also was a city of Longmont tennis and golf Champion in the 1950's.John married Joan Icenogle, also of Mattoon, Ill, and they were married the past 70 years. He attended Eastern Illinois University before starting a successful career in the sh business. He became president of Vaisey-Bristol (Jumping Jacks Children's Sh s) Sh Company; and a corporate vice president of the U.S. Sh Corp. in Cincinnati, Ohio. He later became general manager of the woman's sh division of Brown Sh Company in St. Louis, Missouri.John is survived by his wife Joan; sons John (Marbie) of Westminster, CO and Jason of Cherry Hills Village, CO; daughter Julie (Frank Baird) of Reno, NV; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Longmont Humane Society or the Wounded Warriors Project in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.Visitation 4:00-6:00 PM Monday January 26, 2015 at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.
