John was born on May 26, 1939 in Pennsylvania, the son of William and Elsie M. Sullivan. After high school, he attended Gannon College in Erie, PA where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After graduating college, he joined the U.S. Army. While at Gannon, he met his wife, Judith Madison whom he married in 1965. (They divorced in 1990.) Together, they had three children, Timothy, Julianne and Daniel.
John worked at several companies in northwest Pennsylvania, and Ohio, before moving the family and making their home in Longmont in 1980. Soon after moving to Colorado, he helped start a youth soccer club, which eventually became the St. Vrain Soccer Association. He worked for StorageTek for more than 15 years, before pursuing other opportunities and eventually retiring in 1995.
His draw to Colorado was his passion for the outdoors. In his younger years, he enjoyed camping and hiking – even completing a few fourteeners. Throughout his years, he was always keenly interested in the news of the day and enjoyed a lively debate about politics. Known for being a man of few words, John had a quiet strength and resilience about him – enduring many health challenges in his final years. Most of all, he was deeply committed to his family and children. He beamed with pride when talking about his children. His legacy will continue in their life’s happiness and accomplishments.
He enjoyed spending time with family, often traveling to California, Idaho, Maine, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virgina for reunions. His trip to Ireland in 2006 to spend time with his siblings and his son Daniel was a highlight.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Rev. Msgr. Richard J. Sullivan and Capt. William K. Sullivan, his brother-in-law, Larry Hall and former wife Judith. He is survived by his son, Timothy (Kim) of Fort Collins, daughter, Julianne (Jay) of NM and son Daniel of Denver. In addition, he is survived by his sisters & sister-in-law, Peg (Ron) Woolf of CA, Mary Hall of PA, Jeanie Sullivan of PA, as well as Gayle Sullivan of ID. Other survivors include several cousins, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A private memorial and burial will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on June 15, 2023.
