Judy Patterson Smith

Judy was born on Dec 27, 1940 in Houston, Texas to William and Louise Hopson Massengale. After her parents divorced, her mother remarried and she was adopted by Otis K. Smith on May 10, 1946.

She married Marty Martinez (Adolfo Francisco Martinez, Sr.) on April 6, 1957 and had two sons Frank and Mark. After their divorce she went to work for the Boulder County Roads Department and pioneered women’s employment outside the office by driving a dump truck and running a road striper.

Judy was highly educated by a thoughtful selection of books and other media from wide range of topics and achieved a remarkable ability to relate comfortably and intellectually with people from a variety of backgrounds and nationalities.

She was an avid birder, nature lover, collector of unique rocks, minerals and a talented photographer. She loved music, art, museums, travel and made friends where ever she went.

Judy was very generous and possessed a deep desire to help those in need. She gave without fanfare, donating anonymously to organizations around Colorado and worldwide. Her charitable spirt also led to volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, The Lyons Senior Activity Center and the Lyons Library.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jada Martinez, grandchildren Marissa and Cade, El Cajon, California, by her aunt, Joyce Johnston, of Dallas, Texas; her daughter-of-the-heart, Tamara Miles, of Burbank, California, her dear, longtime friend and caregiver, Dene Sapp, her cousin and sister-of-the-heart, May Hopson, of Austin, nieces, Lori Derrick Blalock and Christie Derrick and their families, of South Carolina, numerous cousins in New Mexico, Texas, California, Hawaii, and Oregon.

She was predeceased by her parents, Louise and Otis Smith, her son, Frank, her sister, Noreen Massengale Derrick, and several beloved feline and canine family members.
