

Kenneth John NicholasApril 21, 1926 “ January 23, 2016Kenneth John Nicholas, 89, of Longmont, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016 at The Bridge Assisted Living Center.He was born April 21, 1926 in Longmont, CO to Franklin Nicholas and Charlotte Link, and worked hard with his sister, Ione on their family farms in Lafayette and Longmont.Ken graduated from Lafayette High School and although he did not attend college himself, went on to teach Fire Sciences at Metro State University. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army Medical Core during WWII and served in Oahu, Hawaii until the end of the war in 1946. After the war, Ken began working for Keller Truck and Implement in Lafayette. In 1952, Ken was a Firefighter, an Engineer, the Lieutenant, the Fire Marshal, and the Assistant Chief for the City of Boulder Fire Department, until 1966, when he became Chief. On December 31, 1944, Ken married Alice Preston and they moved to Longmont from Estes Park in 1994.Ken attended Westview Presbyterian Church in Longmont and was a member of the Fire Chief's Association, the Elks and the Kiwanis Club.Ken's hobbies included R.V. travel, restoring antique clocks, collecting model trains, and fishing. He was a fan of the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies.He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Nicholas; his mother, Charlotte Link Nicholas; his wife, Alice Preston; and his sister, Ione Bolton.He is survived by his son, Ken Nick Nicholas (Charla) of Lafayette; his grandchildren, Paul Nicholas (Elena) of Louisville, Julie (Jordan) Norton of Loveland; and his great-grandchildren, Miles Nicholas, and Autumn Blowers, both of Louisville, and Emma and Aiden Norton of Loveland.Memorial services will be held at 11am, Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Westview Presbyterian Church in Longmont.Memorial contributions can be made to Westview Presbyterian Church (1500 Hover St. Longmont, CO).
