Larry is preceded in death by his wife Gerry Highland, parents Murray and Anna Highland, brother Murray (Allen) Highland and Nephew Jack Highland. He is survived by brothers Ronald Cody Highland, wife Phyllis of Kersey, Colorado and Lonnie Dee Highland, wife Cindy of Loveland, Colorado, daughters Teresa and husband Rick Dudden of Ft. Lupton, Colorado; Joy and husband Hoby Daniell of Monroe, Georgia and Julie and husband Dennis Klinkerman of Briggsdale, Colorado. Also survived by 5 grandchildren and their spouses and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
His early years set a pattern of loving livestock, farming and trucking. Eventually the family (including Allan and Cody) moved to Buckingham, Colorado to run as, what was known at that time, the Filer ranch raising horses, cattle and buffalo. After approximately 5 years and a short stint in Model, Colorado where younger brother Lonnie “Dee” was born, they then took over another ranch at Oakcreek, Colorado near Steamboat. Larry was about 15 years old during that move. Larry, Allen and Cody rode horses to the bus stop for a short ride to school. After approximately 4 years, the family moved to Loveland.
Larry quit school in the 10th grade and learned to truck from his father which lead to Larry Highland Trucking – trucking hay and later cattle, stacking up millions of miles on the road. He rode bareback in rodeos and later became a team roper. Larry loved to roller skate and was just as quick going backwards as forwards. He formed a love of dancing early in his years.
After having his first born, Teresa, from a previous marriage, he later married Geraldine (Gerry) Smith, a beautiful school teacher from Longmont and the woman he cherished the rest of his days, experiencing a close friendship, companion and wife. In that marriage, he inherited two wonderful daughters, Joy and Julie. Larry and Gerry loved all of their children and grandchildren, giving them all a hand-up both financially and experientially.
Larry and Gerry loved almost every flavor of horses, roping, barrel racing and team roping and plain ole’ trail riding. He and Gerry traveled in their fancy motorhome to attend, as competitors and spectators, various rodeos including the National Finals rodeo annually in Las Vegas and Oklahoma.
After finishing their final years together at a beautiful ranch northeast of Grover, Colorado, meeting wonderful friends, and the passing of Gerry he finished the rest of his years about ½ mile from his brother Cody until moving to a facility in Greeley where he waited to join Gerry in eternity.
Memorial services will be held Friday, December 19 at 1:00 pm at Prairie Rose Community Church, 41525 Weld County Rd 74, Briggsdale, CO. 80611 with Pastor David Rice presiding.
