Louis Dadant Miller is survived by his loving wife Emma Ma Miller, daughter Xiu Xiu, his sister Catherine Miller Delaney and her family, his dear dog Phil, his spirited Aunt Kim MacDonald and a collection of relatives across the country who loved and supported him throughout his life. Louis grew up in Anchorage, KY which fostered his love of strong community ties and a fondness for his love of the outdoors.
Louis was lost unexpectedly on May 16, 2024; however he was living that day as he chose - to help others, and to be “on the Mountain.” Preceded in death by his father Louis Charles Miller, his mother Ann Ryan Miller, and his Uncle Floyd MacDonald, their spirit and the best of them lived on in Louis daily.
The largest family Louis had are his many, many friends. This crew may be unrivaled in diversity of age, elevation of time enjoyed together, career experiments, enjoyment of beer, cannabis, powder days, and fish landed, missed, and embellished.
When your family lives far away—it is your friends that become your family. The shared love, trust, humor, and devotion between Louis and his friends—and his friends and Louis... illustrates the magnitude of this loss. Louis shared the power that gravity and a bluebird day have—the power to bring everyone together. And to keep everyone together.
A skill that Louis mastered was "what's next." Always the optimist—always resourceful—Louis faced moments in his life where he had to think ahead—where he had to modify or reinvent himself to thrive. A fly fisherman, an Olympic cyclist (almost), snowboarder, SnowCat groomer of the year, Miller Soils master, and wood pellet recycler.
This loss places that challenge on all who love Louis. In the most difficult of times we need to just do what he would do. Stay together. Love each other. And dream of a life ahead with him in spirit. Let's make him proud.
We would love to say Louis lived by the rules and followed the law. But that simply is not true. Louis was a friend to every single person he ever met, and honestly, every single one, plus there were more to meet.
The love of living life to the fullest will be celebrated in his adopted home of Longmont, Colorado. Visitation will be held on Saturday May 25, 2024, at Howe Memorial in Longmont. The Celebration of Life will probably continue all weekend, but officially at Long Peaks Brewery from 11 AM to 2 PM on Sunday May 26, 2024. A celebration of Louis will be held in Louisville, KY on a later date.
For his extended family and friend network who are unable to be in Longmont this weekend, Louis would request the following: Grab your smoker-to-go (because you have two to three in the garage), coordinate the meats to smoke, plan for four good friends, but bring enough for 20. Please grab the good coolers, once again, pack for the good friends (multiple coolers), plus “just in case” beverages for the new friends you are to make this weekend. Please pack a fly rod, possibly to cast or possibly for a story told. Enjoy in the mountains with some Widespread playing. Please note something may literally blow up on the way or possibly there is a small fire, raise your glass in a toast. Peace and love.
In lieu of flowers the family respectively asks to plant something that will bloom again and again. Alternatively, there will be a donation option towards Xiu Xiu’s college fund which will be established in his memory. Or please donate to the local community garden: longmontorganic.org.
