

Melbourne Eugene Stone passed away September 19th at Berthoud Care & Rehab Center in Berthoud, CO. He was born March 1, 1945 to Melbourne Eugene Vincel and Ruth Elizabeth Otillia (Engel) Stone in Wray, CO.
Stoney attended Wray High School excelling in sports and FFA. He worked at a local gas station and helped his folks and neighbors with cattle and harvesting.
After graduating high school he moved to Boulder, CO where he worked for Marv’s Wrecking and was hired with C-DOT in 1966. He transferred to Estes Park where he met and married Connie (Hersh) Ingram in April 1974.
They relocated to the Longmont area in 1981. Stoney was promoted to District Mechanic, working again from Boulder covering a large area and maintained over 85 pieces of equipment.
He received numerous certificates of education, achievement and appreciation including one from the Colorado State Patrol for maintenance of their patrol cars. He retired in 2002 after 35 years.
Over the years he also belonged to Boulder Rural, Estes Park and Hygiene Volunteer Fire Departments, winning a county election for his seat on the fire board.
He was also known for his welding ability. He built several custom trailers from stock to flat bed. He loved antique equipment and tools. He could make almost anything out of horseshoes and a shovel! He had a large, barbed wire collection currently displayed at Hygiene Feed.
He was a man of many talents and so much knowledge. We were so blessed to know him.
Stoney is preceded in death by both parents, his adopted son, Shawn and two sisters, Joanna Kay Eckberg and Laura May Soehner. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Connie and grandson Levi, sisters Regina Sue Peterson of Poway, CA and Beverlee Jean Eskew of Otis, CO. He also has three children from a previous marriage. Jamie Rice of Loveland, CO, Lynette Stone of Berthoud, CO, and Doug Stone of Nunn, CO. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Stoney’s Life will be announced by his family at a later date.
