Nicholas “Nick” Birnie passed away peacefully on February 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Born on June 2, 1981, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to Greg Birnie and Helen Eriksen, Nick arrived ready to light up the world — joining his big brother and forever best friend, Christopher, affectionately known to him as “Topher.”
From the very beginning, Nick carried an infectious smile and a heart that seemed too big for this world. He had a rare gift: the ability to make others feel seen, welcomed, and valued. Anyone who knew Nick knew he was always focused on making people smile. Whether he was holding the door open as a true gentleman, offering words of encouragement during someone’s hardest days, or delivering what can only be described as the ultimate dad jokes — complete with perfect timing and that contagious laugh of his — Nick made life brighter.
He had a way of finding humor even when life was heavy. Even during his own difficult times, he made it his mission to lift others up. His laughter filled rooms, his kindness left lasting impressions, and his love ran deep and unwavering. Above all, Nick was proudest of being a father. His son, Nox Birnie, was the center of his world and the greatest joy of his life. The love he had for Nox was boundless, and that love will continue to live on.
Nick was preceded in death by his beloved brothers, Blake Birnie and Bryan Birnie.
He leaves behind his cherished son, Nox Birnie; his brother Christopher “Topher” Birnie; his sister Nicole "Cole" Birnie; his father Greg Birnie; his mother Helen Eriksen; many aunts, uncles, cousins; soon to be brother and sister-in-law; and countless friends who felt more like family. The hole left in our hearts is immeasurable, but so too is the love and laughter he gave us.
A Celebration of Life gathering will be held, with details to be announced and shared with all who knew and loved him.
Though our hearts are broken, we carry forward his smile, his humor, and the reminder he gave us every day — to be kind, to laugh often, and to never underestimate the power of a really good dad joke.
