Pam grew up in Cheyenne and was a 1966 graduate of East High School. Just out of school and working as a waitress, she met Douglas William Howell, who was stationed at Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne. They were married on Pam’s birthday (April 20), 1968 at Oak Knolls Naval Hospital Chapel in Oakland CA. Following Doug’s military discharge, they returned to Cheyenne, where Doug worked for Pam’s father in his auto painting business. In 1972 they moved to Longmont CO. In 2000, they moved to Louisville CO, and later to Brighton CO. After Doug’s passing in 2013, Pam returned to Longmont until 2023, when she moved to the Boulder Canyon Health Center for dementia care.
Pam had exceptional organizational skills and her working years were spent in office administration, notably at the Rocky Flats Nuclear Plant and at Austin Chiropractic Clinic in Louisville.
Pam had a smile that lit up a room, a laugh that let you know she was in the room, and a beautiful singing voice that could fill the room. Her musical talent surfaced at a very early age. As a youngster, she sang in a band with Mom on piano, Dad on banjo, her Grandpa Miller and Jack Shaul on fiddle, and Bert Baker on guitar. They performed weekly at The Eagles (Cheyenne). In 1979 she discovered Sweet Adelines, and for the next 35 years she sang in choruses and quartets in the Boulder-Denver area. In 1987, she was a member of the High Country Chorus when they won the coveted gold medals as International Chorus Champions in Honolulu HI.
Pam also played the organ and enjoyed knitting. Several friends were honored to receive one of her beautiful knitted throws. She loved the color yellow (really yellow). She was a “leftie” and didn’t hesitate to tell you that she was the one in her right mind. She wouldn’t have described herself as a great cook, but she made a mean brandy slush, delicious enchiladas, and seriously naughty popcorn! She and Doug were accomplished square and round-dancers; they were dance instructors at the Dance Ranch near Estes Park until Doug suffered a work-related back injury. They were also avid campers and dog lovers.
As long as her health permitted, Pam was a member of Longs Peak United Methodist Church in Longmont, where she sang in a gospel trio with friends Kathy Crier and Vicki Uhr.
Pam is preceded by her husband Doug, her parents, Doug’s parents, and beloved canine companions Gidget, Brandy, and Nugget. She is survived by sister-in-law Janice “Pix” Gabriel of CA and close friends Kathy Crier, Barb Huner, and Vicki Uhr.
No local services are scheduled. Private graveside services will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
