Peter Sterkel Jr.

Peter Sterkel, Jr., age 93 was born in Berthoud, Colorado September 15, 1927 to Peter Sterkel, Sr. and Katherine Sterkel (Maul) and was the youngest sibling to John Sterkel, George Sterkel, William (Bill) Sterkel, Christine (Chrissy) Pappas, Katherine (Kay) Seay, Elizabeth (Betsy) Sterkel, Molly McGeorge and Florence Horner. He grew up on the family farm in Berthoud and graduated from Berthoud High School in 1945. He served in the army from 1946-1948 in the Occupation Forces in Germany.

Pete married Jean E. Dreith on 11/7/1948 in Berthoud. They were childhood friends, high school sweethearts and lifelong companions for over 72 years. They moved to Longmont from Berthoud in 1955. After leaving the family farm Pete began his career at Mountain Bell in 1955 and retired as a supervisor in 1982. He was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and gathered with this group frequently. He accepted a retirement job at the FAA (Longmont) from 1985 and worked until 1997.

Traveling and family time were Pete’s top priorities. Destinations included all 50 states and all but one Canadian Province. The highlights for Pete and Jean were four camping trips to Alaska and many international tours and cruises that visited 80 countries.

Pete and Jean’s children are Thomas J. Sterkel, deceased (Sarah) and Gale S. Stoakes (Jack). Pete is survived by his grandchildren Brandie Newsham (Michael Matteson), Brittany McDermott (Jeff), and Tenley Sterkel; and great grandchildren Kylie, Morgan, Hannah, Greyson, Hunter, Nadia and Alicia.
