

Richard grew up in Longmont and graduated from Mead High School in 1954. After high school, he proudly served in the Colorado National Guard. In 1958, he married Myrna Jo, and together they shared 40 years of marriage.
He worked as a sugar beet farmer and spent 30 years with the Left Hand Water District, retiring in 1997. Richard was deeply committed to his community and served as the Boulder County 4-H Beef Superintendent for 20 years. He had a passion for restoring antique tractors, participating in the Yesteryear Farm Show, and especially enjoyed helping his kids and grandkids with their 4-H projects.
Richard is survived by his children: Scott (Carrie) Smith and Teri Jo (Mike) Laber; grandchildren Heath (Cole) Laber, David (Melissa) Laber, Ashlee Smith, Kaisha Smith, Levi Smith, and Josie Smith; and great-grandchildren Wyatt, Waylon, Kam, Eva, Hayden, Cheyenne, Aubrey, Landon, and Grayson.
He was preceded in death by Myrna Jo; his parents, George and Mary; and brothers George, Leroy, Jake, Leonard, and Vigil Smith and sisters, Mary Lou and Susie.
Richard will be remembered for his dedication to family, community, and his love of the land. His legacy lives on through the values he instilled in his children and grandchildren.
