Sarah was born April 9, 1939 in Carlisle, PA the daughter of army doctor, Colonel Weldon K. and Lorene (West) Ruth.
As a toddler, Sarah and her family lived in the Philippines where her father was stationed training doctors prior to WWII, but moved to Okeene, OK (residing at the Ruth home) until the war ended. After the war, Sarah and her family moved to Fitzsimmons Army Base & Hospital in Denver, CO.
Following the death of her father, Sarah, her mother and sister moved to Boulder, CO where she graduated from Boulder High School in 1957. She then went on to complete two years of nursing school at CU - Boulder before becoming very ill and dropping out of the program. While attending CU, she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority.
In 1959, Sarah met Philip E. Stern in Hartford, CT. They fell in love and were wed in 1960. They had 3 children together. Although the marriage didn’t last, the love for their children did.
In the late 1970’s, Sarah’s career in accounting began. Following her divorce, Sarah moved back to CO in 1981 and began working at Micro Motion, Inc. She retired after 20 years of faithful service. She lived in Longmont nearly 30 years.
Throughout her life, Sarah enjoyed skiing, gardening, stargazing, reading, puzzles, games, watching movies and volunteering, but above all else, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. We will surely miss her warmth, generosity and sense of humor.
Her parents and her sister, MaryAnn Shanklin, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her children: Melissa Baker (Kyle) of Buffalo Grove, IL; Philip W. Stern (Marie) of San Diego, CA; Stephanie Stern (Dan Curran) of Ft. Collins, CO. Five grandchildren further survive her; Brittany Vipham, Alexa Stern, Savannah Stern, Abigail Curran and Adam Curran. Her legacy lives on through them.
