Susan Jane Hicks, 77, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Loveland, Colorado, surrounded by loving family. She had been under hospice care following a period of declining health.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on July 8, 1948, Susan was raised in Brazil, Indiana, by her parents, Dr. Robert Marion Maurer and Jane Brattin Zeller Maurer. She graduated from Brazil High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Indiana University, also attending Millikin University.
On July 10, 1971, she married Don Clayton Hicks, and they shared 50 years together until his passing in 2022. They made their home in Indianapolis for many years before settling in Sleepy Hollow, Illinois, in 1986. Originally coming to Colorado for a visit, Susan remained with her daughter’s family when her health no longer allowed her to return home.
Susan was an avid reader, a lifelong and loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and Indiana Hoosiers, and she loved to travel - especially to the beach, her favorite place to be. She was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega and was raised in the Presbyterian Church. Her greatest joy was being a devoted wife, mother, and Nana.
She is survived by her children, Karen (Steven) Fettes of Loveland, CO, and Robert (Dena) Hicks of Lisle, IL; her beloved grandchildren, Logan, Lauren, and Luke Fettes, and Clayton and Carly Hicks; her brother, John (Martha) Maurer of Brazil, IN; and her niece, Emily (Justin) Staley; as well as extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and nephew, David Maurer.
Private burial services will be held. A celebration of life will take place in August in Illinois. Susan will be remembered for her warmth and unwavering love for her family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gail Borden Public Library Foundation in Elgin, Illinois - an organization close to Susan’s heart.
