

William Patrick ""Packy"" Flynn, 87, passed away on December 24, 2008, at the HospiceCare Center in Louisville, Colorado.Mr. Flynn was born January 21, 1921, to James M. and Nellie (Henley) Flynn in Pueblo, Colorado. In 1929 the family was separated and he came to live with his Aunt Bessie Henley at Daley School east of Longmont, Colorado. He graduated from Erie High School in 1939.He married Mildred (Powell) Flynn on August 24, 1946 in Denver, Colorado. His wife predeceased him on August 12, 1996, just short of their 50th wedding anniversary.Bill ""Packy"" Flynn was a veteran of World War Two, where he served with a battalion in Canada building the Alcan Highway, an experience he talked about frequently. He participated in the Normandy Invasion and marched across Europe during the European Campaign. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945.He was a long time resident of the Longmont area where he fed cattle and farmed for many years. In the 1960s he began working in the coalmines to supplement the farm income. He worked at the Washington Mine in Erie, the Lincoln Mine in Dacono and then spent ten years commuting to the mines in Craig, Colorado. He retired in the early 1980s. He was a member of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church and the United Mine Workers of America.Bill ""Packy"" is survived by his sons, James (Khileen) Flynn of Platteville, Kevin (Connie) Flynn of Firestone, Shawn (Dana) Flynn of Berthoud; a daughter, Maureen Flynn Day of Longmont; and a brother, Emmett (Ruby) Flynn of Northglenn. Also surviving are his seven grandchildren; Dugan (Andrea) Flynn, Ryan (Angie) Flynn, Casey Flynn, Stephanie Flynn, Klint Flynn, Tyler Flynn, Kent Flynn; and step-grandchildren, Chad (Kim) Clymer, and Kami (John) Hamilton; as well as eight great-grandchildren/step-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Katie Powell and June Powell Miller, both of Longmont.Packy Flynn was an Irishman through and through, and his teasing, wit, and dancing blue eyes will by missed by his family and many friends.A memorial service to celebrate ""Packy's"" life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, 323 Collyer, Longmont. Services will be officiated by Deacon Bob Howard. Cremation has taken place at Howe Mortuary and Cremation Services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties, 2594 Trailridge Drive East, Suite A, Lafayette, CO 80026, or the giver's charity of choice, in memory of William P. Flynn, care of Howe Mortuary, 439 Coffman St., Longmont, 80501.
