Bill was born in Thomas, Oklahoma, on November 21, 1931 to Jay E. and Etta Mae (Broaddus) Lackey.
He graduated from Britton Junior/Senior High School in Thomas, Oklahoma, in 1950. Bill enlisted into the United States Air Force in October of 1950 where he served for four years during the Korean War. He was stationed with 754th AC&W Squadron in Port Austin, Michigan where he worked as a radar operator and was discharged in October 1954 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was hired by the Civil Aeronautics Administration, later to become the Federal Aviation Administration.
He continued a career as an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA for 27 years with service at the Detroit, Chicago and Denver Air Traffic Control Center in Longmont where he retired.
He married Margaret Mae Hall on August 9, 1956 in Mapleton, Minnesota at St. Teresa Catholic Church. They happily shared their lives together for 65 years.
Bill was a devout Catholic and loved his family. He also was an avid skier for fifty years which brought them to Colorado from the Midwest. When not on the ski slope one could find Bill on the golf course, playing and teaching for nearly 65 years! He enjoyed time with his children and family on vacations in Minnesota, Michigan, Arizona, Oklahoma; and fishing expeditions to Alaska, gardening, following current events, helping friends in need and Sudoku!
His fondest memories are jogging the Boulder-Boulder, Northern Colorado Honor Flight to Washington D.C. and “having the best friends and neighbors in the world”.
