David Nelly Sr., 72, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 2, 2025. A lifelong resident of Louisville, David was a dedicated family man, a community servant, and a loving friend.
David retired after 35 years from Ford Motor Company. He was also a proud firefighter of the South Dixie/PRP Fire Department and retired after 45 years of service. He enjoyed training firefighters and instructing CPR training. David’s heart for service extended beyond his professional life, as he volunteered his time as a baseball and football coach, assisted with Valley High School’s marching band, and chaperoned camping trips for Watson Lane Elementary students.
An avid University of Kentucky fan, David loved supporting his team, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially hanging out at the lake and camping. He was a member of South Jefferson Christian Church and currently worked as a bus driver for JCPS.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Eric and Ada Nelly, and his brothers Greg, Kenny, and Gary. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 50 years, Linda Nelly; his sons, David Nelly Jr. (Michelle) and Chris Nelly Sr. (Christina); his grandchildren, Brianna, Sarah, Christopher Jr., Josie, Madison, Nathan, Michael, and Edward; and a host of great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Angela.
Family requests donations be made to the WHAS Crusade for Children, an organization close to David’s heart.
David will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of service, love, and dedication will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.
A visitation for David will be held Thursday, March 6, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Advantage Funeral Home, 10907 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, Kentucky 40272. A funeral will occur Friday, March 7, 2025, from 11:00 AM at Advantage Funeral Home with a burial to follow Bethany Memorial Cemetery, 10917 Dixie Hwy, Louisville, KY 40272.
