In 1924, Billye’s family moved to Lufkin and there she spent most of her life except for seven years that she lived in Houston, working for Shell Oil, just after she graduated from Stephen F. Austin University in 1943.
Billye returned to Lufkin to begin her teaching career in 1951. Billye taught at Zavalla School District for her first two years and then moved to the Hudson School District and established and taught their science department for seven more years. Teaching was Billye’s true love but not her first love. In 1960 when she was on a trip to California, she received a call. It was from Lufkin High School asking her to head their art department. This was a thrill and a chance to teach her first love - Art! This started her teaching art and being Lufkin High School’s #1 supporter during the school year and this let her travel the world every summer. When home, she taught the junior girls on Sundays at Lufkin’s First Baptist Church, her spiritual home and inspiration. For thirty-two plus years Billye had the life she loved and she was grateful for it. Billye was always an adventurer. In the later years with her hair thinning, wind blowing it all asunder she took to wearing caps to help keep her hair in line, for this many around Lufkin knew her and lovingly call her “The Cap Lady”.
Our beloved Billye Marie is survived by her two sisters, Lou Ray (York) Berry of Lufkin, Texas and Marthalene (York) Harrison of Fort Worth, Texas; one nephew, William D. Berry and family Dawn, Layne, and Myla; one niece, Andrea (Harrison) Carrington and her family Fred, Lisa, Cheri, and Tracy and their families; and her life long traveling partner and close friend, Dr. Anna Beth Connell.
Billye was preceded to our Lord by her loving parents, Bertha and Bryan York; two brothers-in-law, Agee Berry and Rayford Harrison; and her dearly loved nephew, Bryan Andrew (Drew) Berry. May the peace of the Lord be with you and yours.
