He was the devoted husband of 62 years to Carolyn Boyd Salas. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and service. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Kenny Koon, De'Anna and Kevin Vincent, and his daughter-in-law, Kim Dias Salas.
He was a proud grandfather to granddaughters Amber Koon Miller and her husband Bo Miller, Brandi Salas Wilbur and her husband Dana Wilbur, Chandler Bland, Taylor Bland, and Alyson Champion, as well as grandsons: Jesse Buckley, and Channing Rankin. His legacy continues through his great grandchildren, Ryder Salas, Arden Miller, Slayton Salas, Peyton Cannon, Myles Champion, Victoria Rankin, and Charles Rankin.
He is also survived by his sister, Sandra Stavinoha, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Eric Wayne Salas, his parents Ben and Rose Salas, his brothers Armand, Carl, Paul, Mike, and Ray Salas, and his sisters Rosemary Prochaska and Elaine Broll.
Dr. Salas served his country in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969. He earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University in 1967 and dedicated his life to caring for animals and serving his community.
He acquired Angelina Animal Hospital in 1971 and faithfully served the region for nearly four decades in small, large, and exotic animals. He was the veterinarian for Ellen Trout Zoo, the Winnie Berry Animal Shelter, and Kurth Animal Shelter. He also volunteered his time and expertise to local area 4-H and FFA youth, supporting countless young people with their show animals. His love for animals was only matched by his love for teaching and mentoring others. He was also a former member of Lufkin's Lions Club.
Beyond his professional life, he had a passion for flowers, gardening, and his cattle.
Pallbearers will be Steve Allen, Dr. Lindsey Syler, Roy Meyer, Kevin Salas, Ben Salas, Eddie Pepper, Kenny Koon, and Bo Miller.
Services officiated by Deacon Jesus Reyes from St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church.
Dr. Salas leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and dedication to both animals and people. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
