Doris Jo Coan Dickens

Doris Jo Coan Dickens, 81, of Lufkin, was born October 29, 1928 in Shelby County, Texas, the daughter of the late Frances L. (Givens) and Robert M. Coan. She passed away Tuesday, May 4, 2010 in a local hospital.

Mrs. Dickens loved her family and devoted her life to them. She enjoyed painting and had a lifelong love of art. She enjoyed sketching, painting and working with charcoals and pastels while in college.. She was a faithful church member and at the time of her passing, was a member of Spring Cypress Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Dickens received her B.A. degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Survivors include her son, James Robert Dickens of Lufkin; daughters, Kristie L. Knoll of Brentwood, CA, Kathy L. Haines of Woodland Park, CO, Karol L. Whitlow of Divide, CO, and Kimmie L. Gilmore of Houston; 3 granddaughters; 3 grandsons; several great-grandchildren; extended family members and friends.

Mrs. Dickens was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Ferman A. Dickens, in 2008. She often referred to him as "the love of her life".

Services for Mrs. Dickens will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Mark O'Neill officiating.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10:00 .m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel.
