Lonnie attended Hudson ISD before joining the United States Navy at the age of 17. His military service earned him a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, a Navy Unit Commendation, and a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. After the military, he worked in the insurance industry. He was a master gardener who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Gordon Peterson of Garland, Texas, Morris Peterson of Diboll, Texas, and Kenneth Peterson of Mount Selman, Texas.
He is survived by his niece, Aleta Peterson Tullous and husband Sam of Lufkin; nephews, Marcus Peterson and Travis Peterson and wife Holly, all of Lufkin; and numerous cousins and other relatives.
A memorial service with Navy Honors will be held by the family at a later date.
