Marian "June" Thornton Walters

Mrs. Walters was born November 20, 1949 in Houston, Texas, the daughter of the late Miriam Opal (Forse) and M. O. “Obie” Murray. She passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Kingwood Hospital.

She was raised in Huntington and graduated from Huntington High School. She loved her kids and grandkids and was a devoted grandmother. She went to work at Southland Paper Mill in Lufkin and transferred to Sheldon in 1989, for a total of 32 years. She loved being outdoors – especially fishing in the lake and tending her plants and flowers. She loved to dance and clog. She was the director of her clogging group that performed in Houston and area towns. She was selfless and always there when needed. June was a member of Highway Baptist Church, where she often sang special music.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Walters of Huffman; son and daughter-in-law, Kelly Douglas and Wendy Thornton of Huntington; daughter, Melanie Suzanne Thornton of Lufkin; stepchildren, Naylan Walters of Huffman, Tiffany Walters of Whitesboro, and Kendra Walters and fiancé, Derek Ethridge of Whitesboro; brothers and sisters-in-law, M. A. “Tony” and Cindy Murray of Huntington, David and Cindy Murray of Hudson and Randy and Sarah Murray of Huntington; grandchildren, Samantha Thornton and Caroline Thornton, both of Huntington, Zoe Ready of Lufkin, Paytyn Ethridge, Billy Reasor, and Madison Reasor, all of Whitesboro; beloved aunts, Jany Dempsey of Lufkin and Judy Fields and husband Joe of Deer Park; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other family members.

In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by her former husband, Doug Thornton; and grandmother, Etta Murray.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Murray, Chad Murray, Naylan Walters, Derek Etheridge, Gavin Howard, and Darick Curry.

Honorary pallbearers will be all Papermill employees.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday evening at Gipson Funeral Home.
