Services for Maurine Childs Parker, 97, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2019 in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Dr. Jerome Brimmage officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.
Mrs. Parker was born December 23, 1921 in Shelby County, Texas, the daughter of the late Sarah Elizabeth (Palmer) and James F. Childs. She went to be with her Lord on Saturday, May 11, 2019.
Mrs. Parker graduated from Center High School in 1939 and attended Draughon’s Business College in Dallas. Maurine and O. L. Parker were married in 1947 and moved to Houston, where she was Executive Secretary to the owner and Corporate Secretary for Bland-Willis Cadillac Co. for 23 years. After early retirement, they bought an Airstream Travel Trailer and for 30 years they traveled all over the United States, Canada and Mexico with their many Airstream friends. After moving to Lufkin in 1976, they remained active in the Airstream Community at TAHI where she was a pianist for their church services.
She was a member of Lufkin’s First United Methodist Church and enjoyed her Sunday School there.
Maurine’s most rewarding hobby was genealogy. She and O. L. Traveled many miles in pursuit of data about her elusive ancestors. She compiled stories of the Childs family and published “Meet Your Ancestors” in 1991.
Maurine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, O. L. Parker; and her brothers, Mortie, Marlie, Auvy and Alford.
She is survived by four generations of nieces, nephews and their families.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Pinecrest Retirement Community for their care during her final days, Jack and Dianne Porter for their loving care and Sheila Champion for her devoted care and friendship to Maurine.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Maurine’s memory may be made to First United Methodist Church, 805 E. Denman Avenue, Lufkin, TX 75901.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home.
