Nelwyn Rebecca (Johnson) Berry

Services for Nelwyn R. (Johnson) Berry, 101, of Lufkin, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday in the Gipson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. D. Nick Sholars officiating, and Frank Starr reading the obituary. Interment will follow in the Berry Cemetery.

Mrs. Berry was born January 10, 1913 in Laneville, Texas and passed away Friday, November 21, 2014 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Tommie (Wright) and Robert Pierce Johnson.

Mrs. Berry was a retired teacher of first and second grade for 25 years. She taught three years in Snyder, two years in Cushing and twenty years in Lufkin. She was a charter member of Angelina County Retired Teachers Association, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Cut and Grow Garden Club, DAR, and Wesleyan Service Guild. She was a talented musician. She was a member of Lufkin’s First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Ted McComber; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Evelyn Berry; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Judy Berry; son-in-law, Larry Perry, all of Lufkin; grandchildren, Angie and Jake Alaniz, Ray Berry and Ryan Berry, Candi and Don Edwards, Chad and Katie Berry, Chris Berry, Missy Perry, Court and Brooke Perry, Glenn Perry; 12 great-grandchildren; extended family, Jennifer and Brian Powell and family and Ted and Glenda McComber and family; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Glenn W. Berry; son, Robert Allen Berry; two brothers, Robert and David Johnson; two sisters, Eleanor Tucker and Elizabeth Moore.

Memorial contributions in Mrs. Berry’s memory may be made to the remodeling fund at First United Methodist Church, 805 E. Denman Avenue, Lufkin, TX 75901 or Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, TX 75904.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers, Delma Brown, Edna Ligon, Versia Sanders, and yard caregiver, James Tapscott, and Hospice in the Pines Staff.

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Berry’s grandsons.
