Ralph Lowry Root

Services for Ralph Lowry Root, 90, of Lufkin, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014 at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, with The Reverend Arthur A. Callaham officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held in the Parrish Hall. Private interment will be held in the Garden of Memories Memorial Park.

Mr. Root was born June 21, 1923 in Lufkin, Texas, the son of the late Lillie Etta (Lowry) and Will Root. He passed away Friday, February 28, 2014 in a local hospice facility.

Mr. Root was a member of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church. He served as a Pharmacist Mate in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946 during World War II. He worked at Southland Paper Mill and retired in 1982 as a Maintenance Service Supervisor. He was an avid golfer and a member of Lufkin Country Club. He also enjoyed fishing and RV travel for many years. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Margarett Root of Lufkin; daughter, Susanne Root of Overland Park, Kansas; son, David Root of Lufkin; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Caroll Mitchell, Robert, Edward, and Charles Root; and 2 sisters, Willetta and Robinette Root.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Root’s memory may be made to St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church, 1115 S. John Redditt Drive, Lufkin, TX 75901; to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, TX 75901; or to a charity of your choice.

Mr. Root’s family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Hospice in the Pines, the staff of Angelina Home Health Care, and to Dr. David W. Glenn and his staff for the loving care shown to him.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Gipson Funeral Home.
