

Mr. Albert W. Smith, 92, of Lynn, died Friday at home after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Alice J. (Pelley) Chaloner-Bennett-Smith with whom he has shared 29 years of marriage. He was the husband of the late Kathryn L. (Austin) Smith.
Al was born in Lynn, son of the late C. Albert and Clara (Woodman) Smith. He was a lifelong resident of the city and was a graduate of Lynn English High School Class of 1935 and later attended Boston University.
Al was an Insurance Agent for John Hancock Insurance Company for 40 years, retiring in 1980. He also sold Insurance for Lynn Five Cents Savings. After Al’s retirement he worked the door at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home for 12 years.
He was a WW II Army veteran and held the rank of Sergeant, he was a member of the Company C 120th Infantry Division Regiment and 30th Infantry Division. He was also awarded a Bronze Star.
Al was a current a member of the Shoemaker American Legion Post 345 and serves as Chaplain. He was a life member of the Lynn Lions Club he also served the club as Secretary and President and was Lion of the year in 1991-1992. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award. He served on the Board of Directors for the Gregg House, Lynn Lions and Camp Lion Inc and the Lynn Cancer Assoc. He was the Past President of the Lynn English High School Alumni Assoc. and was a member of the Bethany Church and the Meadowlarks. Al also enjoyed being involved in local Political Campaigns.
In addition to his wife he is survived by 1 son Paul A. Smith, Sr. and his wife Barbara of Cape Coral, FL, his step children George A. Chaloner of Vietnam, Thomas D. Chaloner and his wife Donna of Georgetown, William P. Bennett and his wife Cinthia of York, PA and Terri L. Vickers and her husband Edward of Saugus, 1 brother Clayton W. Smith of Salem, 2 sisters Natalie Thistle of Tewksbury and Louise Turpel of Ocean Springs, MI. Also survived by 5 grandchildren Paul A. Smith,Jr., Holly McGibbon, Jill Sheing, Karen Rines and Scott Smith, 18 great grandchildren, 8 step grandchildren, 1 step great grandchild.
Funeral Services will be in the Bethany United Church of Christ, 410 Eastern Ave, Tuesday at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Monday from 3-7 PM in the Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St. Lynn. Interment will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, West Peabody. Donations in Al’s memory may be made to a Charity of one’s choice.
