LYNN – George H. Smith III, 83, of Middleton, and a lifelong resident of the North Shore, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House. Born and educated in Lynn, George was the devoted son of the late George H. Smith Jr. and Hazel (January) Smith. He graduated from Lynn English High School with the class of 1953.
For the majority of his career in retail, George was the general manager of T.W. Rogers Co. in Lynn for over 25 years. He started out as an assistant manager at S.S. Kresge’s Co. in Lynn and also worked at Burrows and Sanborn and Syms in Peabody as a buyer and manager over the years. He lived in Lynn, Salem, Beverly , Peabody and Middleton.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his lifelong friend, Dick DeBenedetto, his sister, Sandra Sheridan and his nephew, Brian Love. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted brother-in-law, Myles Sheridan of Lynn, his loving niece, Cheri Rossetti and her husband, Joe of Medford and great niece, Ashley Ewen and her husband, Jake and great-nephews, AJ Rossetti and Billy Goode, all of Medford, and many close friends.
George loved to be outside working in his yard and gardening. His love of animals was also well known as he cared for many pets as well as the neighborhood wildlife over the years. What brought George the most joy was being with his family and longtime friends. Many of George’s friendships made at T.W. Rogers over the years continued until his passing.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 4th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn. His Funeral Service will be held in the funeral home on Monday, August 5th at 11:00 a.m. followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.
