

Mr. George A. Murphy, age 86, of Lynn, died Friday night in the Kaplan Family Hospice House surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Alma (Strugnell) Murphy, with whom he shared nearly 60 years of marriage.
Born in Chelmsford, George was the son of the late Thomas and Annabelle (Looby) Murphy. He was raised in Lynn, was a graduate of Lynn English High School Class of 1942 and resided in Lynn his entire life. He enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country during World War II aboard the USS Canberra, which was torpedoed in action in the Marianna Islands.
Prior to his retirement in 1989, George was a Firefighter for the City of Lynn. He was appointed to the Fire Department in 1950 and started at the former Lewis St. Fire Station. He was later assigned to the Hollingsworth St. Fire Station and ended his career at the Engine 11 Station on Lynnfield St. During that time, he also worked as a self employed house painter.
George enjoyed bowling, playing cards, horseshoes and walking.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his children, Timothy Murphy and his wife Nancy of Danvers and Sandy Walker of Lynn. He was the Grandfather of Jennifer and Jeffrey Walker and Brendan Murphy. He was the brother of John Murphy and his wife Betty of Peabody. George was predeceased by 2 sons, Robert T. and Edward Murphy; 2 brothers, Thomas and Paul Murphy, and 1 sister, Ann Green.
George’s Funeral Service will be held in the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Wednesday at 11:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting Hours Tuesday 4-8PM. Gifts in his memory may be sent to the Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty St. Danvers, MA 01923.
