
Mrs. Helen I. (Reynolds) Powers, age 79, of Lynn, died Tuesday morning in the Massachusetts General Hospital. She was the beloved wife of Robert H. Powers, retired Principal of the Julia F. Callahan School, Lynn, with whom she shared 58 years of marriage.
Born in Lynn, Helen was the daughter of the late Thomas P. and Helen (Mulchay) Reynolds. She attended Lynn Schools and was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School Class of 1948. She then attended the Lynn Hospital School of Nursing and was a member of the graduating class of 1951. She began her career as an ER and OR Nurse at the Lynn Hospital.
After raising her family, Helen returned to school, earning both her Baccalaureate and Masters Degrees from Emmanuel College, Boston. She then became a longtime faculty member at Marian Court College, Swampscott, where she served in various departments.
Helen was active in the Alumni Association of the Lynn Hospital School of Nursing and a loyal supporter of Emmanuel College. She was also a longtime volunteer for the Greater Lynn Community Mental Health Center.
Helen was a prolific writer, an avid reader, progressive thinker and scholar, and above all, a lifelong counselor.
In addition to her husband, she leaves her children, Brian A. Powers and his wife Katherine Riggs of San Francisco, CA, Rev. Thomas J. Powers, Pastor of Saint Maria Goretti Parish in Lynnfield, Mary J. Powers of Lynn and Ann M. Powers Gallagher and her husband Richard P. Jr. of Reading. She was the Grandmother of Natalia Powers-Riggs, Aidan Powers-Riggs, Caleb Gallagher and Catherine Gallagher. She was the sister of John “Jack” Reynolds of Lynn and the late Richard T. Reynolds and Patricia L. Horgan. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and beloved friends.
Helen’s Funeral will be held from the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Friday at 8:45AM followed by a Funeral Mass at Saint Maria Goretti Church, Lynnfield at 10:00AM. Relatives and friends invited. Interment Saint Joseph’s Cemetery. Visiting Hours Thursday 4-8PM.
