Mary C. Cunningham of Lynn passed away at North Shore Medical Center on December 4 after a brief illness. Born and raised in Lynn, she was the daughter of the late Peter J. Cunningham and Mary K. (Jordan) Cunningham, and the sister of the late Peter J. Cunningham, Jr. and the late Margaret J. Callahan, all of Lynn.
Mary was a well-known teacher in the Lynn Public School System, and taught for more than 30 years at Lynn English High School. Her students, her friends and her family will always remember her wit, her dry sense of humor, her generosity of spirit, and her voracious appetite for reading and learning. She enjoyed both telling and hearing a good story and was a keen and passionate observer of politics.
She attended St. Mary's High School, Salem State College, and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Suffolk University. Among her many interests Mary enjoyed travel, loved the theater, and above all was passionate about American History. All of these interests were passed down to her two surviving nephews, Brian Callahan of Malden and Dr. William J. Callahan of Boston. She will be greatly missed and always remembered with love by her family, friends, former colleagues and students.
Funeral Services are private. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held this Spring. In recognition of Mary's lifelong dedication to education, a scholarship fund has been established in her name for English High students. Donations may be sent c/o Mr. Thomas Strangie, Principal of Lynn English High, 50 Goodridge Street, Lynn, MA 01902.
