

Richard A. Fitzgerald age 98, Retired Lynn District Fire Chief and lifelong resident of Lynn, passed away peacefully at his home in Lynn on Thursday, November 23, 2017 with his family at his side. He was born in Lynn on March 8, 1919 the son of the late Richard L. and Nora (Salmon) Fitzgerald. He was raised and educated in Lynn and graduated from Lynn English Class of 1936. He also attended North Shore Community College and Salem State College where he received degrees in Fire Science. Richard served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a Sergeant in the Army 41st Depot Repair Squadron serving in both Italy and North Africa. He was honorably discharged. He served the City of Lynn for many years on the Lynn Fire Department as a District Fire Chief. Richard enjoyed spending time being near the ocean and especially going sailing. He was a member of the Lynn Yacht Club and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, serving as a Vessel Examiner, Lynn Flotilla 49.
He was predeceased by his wife, Teresa A. (Howley) Fitzgerald in 2004. His is survived by his three sons; Richard J. Fitzgerald and wife, Susan, Thomas A. Fitzgerald and wife, Joanne and David M. Fitzgerald. His grandchildren; Jessica, Sarah, Katherine, and Sydney Fitzgerald as well as his nephew, Kevin Fitzgerald and his niece, Noreen Clark also survive him. Richard was also predeceased by his brother, Robert Fitzgerald and his daughter-in-law, Tracie Fitzgerald.
Family and friends are invited to attend Mr. Fitzgerald’s visitation on Monday, November 27, 2017 from 4-8 PM at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple Street, Lynn, MA 01904. His funeral will begin on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 10 AM at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 AM at St. Pius V Church, 215 Maple Street in Lynn. Burial with U.S. Army Honors will follow the Mass in St. Mary Cemetery on Lynnfield Street in Lynn. In-lieu of flowers, donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
