Baba was one of the most determined, hard working people you would ever meet. He was so proud of the company he built with his siblings, family, and all the people who helped make it what it is today. He took risks, betting on himself and his ambition.
He and his family came to this country as refugees with nothing. They were forced to flee their home in Cambodia because of the Khmer Rouge genocide. ~ 2M people died during the Khmer Rouge from 1975-1979. They lost so many family and friends. Our parents and their families were put in work camps, suffering from starvation and being overworked. Eventually escaping to a refugee camp in Thailand, they were then sponsored to the US by a church group in Bellevue (1979).
Our dad supported us and made sure we all got the education that he didn’t get growing up. He had to leave school early to work and help support his family. But he was a brilliant man – He read so many books and furthered his education and calligraphy through his own ambition and thirst for knowledge. He taught us to learn from failure, to learn through observation, and to think ahead. He helped us buy homes near our parents so that we could always be close by.
Baba was very generous. He helped lots of family and friends. He was involved in our community and was always donating to those less fortunate. Our dad worked too hard. He didn’t eat and take breaks at times he should’ve, and didn’t get enough sleep because he was working so hard to build his business and provide for us. He told us to take care of our health because all the money in the world can not buy your health back. We can’t take anything with us when we die.
He loved his garden, writing poems, dancing, singing, dim sum, but most of all, he loved his family. Baba, Thank you for all that you did to support us, and for pushing us harder because you wanted more for us and from us. Thank you for your sacrifice so that we could have a better life. We hope your next life is full of love and good health. We love you so much.
