Mr. Claude H. Kemp, Jr (US Army), 88, died early Tuesday morning, November 11, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 15 at 2 o’clock, in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. The Rev. Steve Hamrick will officiate. The family will greet friends from 12:30 until time of service at the funeral home. The family suggests that those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Diabetes Association.
Mr. Kemp was born in Tennille, Georgia to the late Claude Herbert and Dovie Ruth Urquhart Kemp. He actively served his country during WWII in the Pacific Theatre, with the United States Army’s 338th Ordnance Depot Company. He graduated from Lanier High School and received his Bachelor’s degree from Mercer University. Mr. Kemp retired as a Management Analyst from Robins Air Force Base. He was a member of the former Southside United Methodist Church, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason with Masonic Lodge #418 (Ft. Hawkins) and Al Sihah Shrine Temple, VFW Post 658, DAV, the American Legion Post 3 and the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Kemp volunteered as the Scout Master of Troop 23 and as an Assistant Scout Master of Troop 38. His involvement with the Boy Scouts earned his invitation to the Order of the Arrow-Echeconnee Lodge #358. In 1986, he was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, given by the Central Georgia Council for his dedication to the youth of scouting. His passing on Veteran’s Day seems a fitting tribute to a life of serving and protecting his country. Mr. Kemp’s family would like to extend a special word of thanks to the staff of the Georgia War Veterans Home, Milledgeville.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Sue J. Kemp; 7 children, Daphine (Richard) Tolbert, Leon (Karen) Cleghorn, Dorothy Roberson, Joe (DeShelle) Cleghorn, Carl Cleghorn, Emilie (Jeff) Grace, “Sam” Claude H. (Robyn) Kemp, III; 12 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.
