Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents the late Durward Orie Bulloch of LaGrange and Ann Wilma Folds Bulloch of Newborn and her beloved cousin James Mann of Atlanta.
Mrs. Thompson was survived for only 4 days by her lifelong love, her sweetheart and husband of 62 years, Joel Lee Thompson, 83, of Macon. He simply could not go on without her and died of a broken heart. Mrs.Thompson is also survived by her children, Dr. Mark G. Thompson of Atlanta and Darla H. Shelley of Dublin. She has 2 precious grandchildren, Jake K. Hardeman and Chloe J. Shelley also of Dublin. Mrs. Thompson was especially close to her cousins Donald Bulloch, Micheal Bulloch and Elaine Pasario, and nephew Ricky Mattarrazzo of Billerica, Massachusetts and niece Marsha Thompson of Evans, Ga.
Mrs. Thompson was born in Atlanta on August 23,1942. She attended Hoke Smith High School where she played the flute and was head majorette in the marching band. She graduated in 1960. She was awarded a full nursing scholarship to Grady School of nursing. In 1963, she married her high school sweetheart, Joel and followed him to many deployments while he was in the US Navy.
Settling back into Georgia in the early 1970’s, Joel rejoined the Navy as a reservist. Mrs. Thompson worked for several years as a nurse when she found a new talent. Joel had become a real estate broker and sold both residential and commercial real estate. Dianne became a real estate agent and quickly became quite successful. During this they both found that they had a special talent restoring historic homes, most originally built in the late 18 and early 1900’s. Together they restored numerous homes in the historic district of Conyers, farm houses in Mansfield, McDonough, Jackson and Mableton, Georgia.
In the late 1980’s the real estate market crashed and Dianne went back to her nursing roots. Taking a chance to work for the Georgia Department of Corrections, she moved from the prison in Jackson to Coastal State Prison in Savannah. This allowed an exciting few years living on Tybee Island when it was still a well kept secret. Joel got to fish and they walked on the beach every chance they got.
Dianne was promoted to The Training Division with corrections where she retired in 2005. In her retirement, she and Joel bought an RV and traveled all over the US staying on military campgrounds that often offered the best accommodations and scenic views! Closer to home she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her son when he was in town. She also enjoyed working in the yard, always changing up flower beds and planting bushes. She told her daughter not long before her death that she had a long and fulfilling life and couldn’t imagine having better children, grandchildren and of course honey, her husband.
