

Macon GA, James Calhoun (J.C) Petty Sr., age 101, of Macon, surrounded by his family, passed away at the Zebulon Park Health and Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, July 13, 2013. Graveside services will be held at the Macon Memorial Park Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday July 16, 2013 with Rev Tyler Plaxico officiating. His family will greet friends from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at the Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home.
J.C. was born in Macon, GA the son of Victoria Mae Mason Petty and Arthur Montgomery Petty Sr. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Macon, Georgia. He worked at Sterchi’s for over 52 years. His first job with them was delivering furniture then he moved on to installing antennas for their radio department. After a time he moved to floor salesman. He managed the store on Poplar Street for one year but returned to his favorite position of floor salesman. He was proud of the fact the he served several generations of Macon families. He was preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Murrie Elise Hays Petty, his brother Arthur Montgomery Petty Jr., and his three sisters, Beatrice Cook, Mary Frances Brown and Ruth Hitchcock.
In World War II, he served in the 4th Marine Division in Artillery working as a radio operator and spotter. He served in the Pacific Theatre and was on the island of Iwo Jima when the soldiers raised the historic flag. After the war, he returned home to 1193 Schley Street where he and his wife, Murrie lived for over 70 years and raised their family. He loved his wife and children and enjoyed all types of games, sports, trivia and television repair.
Mr. Petty is survived by his daughters, Margie Griggers (Bubber), Jean Anne Kent, Rose Willingham (Tommy), LaVerne Tyson (Jerry), Linda Hoke (Tommy), his son James Calhoun (Buddy) Petty Jr. (Phyllis), 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
